Ending the Teaching Note: General Discussion, Epilogue, and Additional Pedagogical Materials Excellence in Case Studies: Part 8

In our Excellence in Case Studies series, we have examined the essential elements of a case study that engages the reader and a teaching note that provides instructors with the authors’ perspectives and guidance. If you are an experienced case writer, we hope this series has provided insights that strengthened your skills or, at least, reminded you what makes a case and teaching note a stronger candidate for publication in the Society for Case Research (SCR) journals. If you are a novice case writer, we hope this series has helped you recognize that writing a case study is more than just telling a story. An excellent case study also includes a teaching note that applies theories and concepts for analyzing the case. While the case opening hook engages the reader, and its closing hook guides the reader toward analysis, the teaching note is often what helps an instructor decide to adopt the case. In this letter, we examine three parts of the teaching note that can not only make the case a stronger candidate for publication, but they also make it more attractive to potential adopters.
