Sofia was excited to volunteer at The Branch of Nashville a local nonprofit helping those facing food insecurity. She was part of the University’s Enactus program and ready to help in any way possible. One day she was scheduled to help unload a truck full of donated food at the main Branch facility.
Her initial volunteering experience revealed many forms of waste (waste in motion, time, transportation, etc.). She thought there had to be a more efficient way to unload the trucks and organize the facility. She remembered discussion of lean six sigma techniques in her operations management course and thought maybe she could use some of those tools to help improve the flow and reduce the waste within the Branch’s four walls.
