Throughout the years Goodwill Industries has generated billions of dollars. The current average hourly pay rate for a Goodwill Industries worker is $12.94. In 2017, Goodwill Omaha fired its long time CEO over his six-figure salary. In 2019, the Lincoln Goodwill CEO initially fired disabled workers over a planned state salary increase. Goodwill’s response was that they should be applauded for employing such workers and offering them a salary (Karoma, 2022). In 2022, a former Goodwill worker claimed any donated items that were perceived to have value were quickly “shepherded away” to be sold online. Brad Turner-Little Senior Director of Strategy states that Goodwill is a member association, and they have “no control over such discrepancies” and it’s up to the local community members to create change (Carter, 2018). This case presents a unique opportunity to delve into behaviors of a charitable organization to explore whether it is indeed charitable.
