Are There Hotbeds of Case Research? An Exploratory Examination of the Institutions and Authors who Publish Cases within the Society for Case Research

This study explores whether specific academic institutions and individuals serve as “hotbeds” of case research within the Society for Case Research (SCR). Using content analysis of 198 peer-reviewed submissions published between 2018 and 2022 in SCR journals, the authors identify the most prolific case writers and institutions contributing to the field. Drawing on cluster theory and concepts of knowledge transfer, the study finds that a small number of institutions and authors are responsible for a disproportionately high volume of case publications. These clusters suggest the presence of supportive institutional cultures and influential individuals who foster case writing within their networks. The findings have implications for faculty development, institutional strategy, and accreditation bodies that value pedagogical scholarship. The study also invites future research into the motivations, networks, and organizational conditions that sustain high productivity in case research.
